An international multisport federation uniting members to make a healthier, fitter world through sport.
To grow multisports and make them relevant in people's lives and to inspire their communities.
• The primary goal is a larger, more influential, wealthier international multisport federation in the Olympic family
• Integration will be successful if it is fair, and representation is equitable
• Important to understand and focus on opportunities
• Evaluate challenges and their solutions
• Done properly the integration creates synergy: 1 + 1 = 3
• A win-win for all member associations and federations
• A merger, not a take over
• Provide representative governance for all sports
• Ensure national member federations and their communities do not lose what they have built
• Provide efficiencies in governance by streamlining and funding functions and staff
• Add value by aligning sport functions
• Healthier organizations through increased revenues
• Standalone medal events on the Olympic programme
• ATHLETICS (World Athletics) 13 sport “disciplines” including mountain running (joined 2002) and trail running (2015)
• CANOE (ICF) 14 sports including ocean racing (2003), waveski surfing (2018), SUP (2018), rafting (2018) and va’a (2009)
• CYCLING (UCI) 11 sports including mountain bike (1990), BMX (1993), and gravel (2022)
• AQUATICS (World Aquatics) 6 sports including swimming, water polo, diving, artistic swimming, open water swimming (1991), and high diving (2013)
• Loss of control of the sports
• Lack of representation
• Failure to integrate
• Failure to structure IF governance for the benefit of the sports
• Validation of all sports as part of an IOC recognized International Federation (IF): all sports become “Olympic”
• Full time IF staff and office
• National Olympic Committee recognition for all members
• National Sports Authority (governmental) recognition
• Governmental funding
• Global media exposure as Olympic sports
• Ensuring equitable representation for all stakeholders
• Maintaining governance / control of obstacle sports
• Integration at national level
• Pathway to international multisport Games for national teams and athletes
• More money for national teams, athletes, and sport functions like coaching and officiating
• Increased support by national and local governments for events
• Increased opportunities for sponsorships and grants
• Engagement of a larger audience for all sports: 5B people watching the Olympic Games
• Pathway for some athletes to Los Angeles 2028 in Pentathlon (swim, fence, laser run, obstacle)
After consultation with Australian Sports Commission (ASC), it was recommended that, given Modern Pentathlon Australia (MPA) is already recognised, Obstacle Australia (OA) integrate into the MPA to form a new ‘Multisport’ Federation, and that an MOU be established outlining the principles of the integration. This will ensure continuity of recognition and this will be the only national governing body for modern pentathlon and obstacle sports recognized by Australian Olympic Committee (AIC) and ASC.
